W-Robinson L-Schmidt HRS: Lynch, Covington, Mathews GWRBI-Mathews
The type of game the Braves would have easily lost a month ago. This time it puts them a half game out of first place. Covington’s 2-run clout in the 1st puts them up 2-0, but Spahn gives the Reds three runs right away. The Braves bunch six singles, two walks and a double together off Schmidt in the 3rd, score six times. Spahn gives the Reds three runs right back, and it’s 8-7 when Humberto Robinson finally relieves him. Lynch ties it with a solo shot in the 8th but Mathews matches him over the reaching glove of Gus Bell for the winner.

W-Craig L-Brosnan HRS: Fairly, Roseboro, Flood GWRBI-Hodges
The erratic Jim Brosnan is awful again, serving up two homers in the 1st and walking six before Morrie Martin relieves him, only to give up Hodges’ go-ahead ground out. Cards are back to .500, Dodgers stay tied with hot Milwaukee.

W-Aguirre L-Daley HR: Lopez GWRBI-Martin
Clutch 9th inning rally is capped by Billy Martin’s winning single past drawn-in infield, as the Tigers reach the .500 mark. Bob Grim turns in another grim start for the A’s, but Bud Daley comes in for the save and gets none of his three batters out.

W-McLish L-Wilson HRS: Doby, Colavito GWRBI-Power
The Tribe improves to 8-3 vs. the White Sox, who fail to gain ground on the idle Yanks. Also with the day off are the Red Sox and Orioles, who open a big two-game set with New York at Memorial Stadium tomorrow.
